Access China Gas and Heating Business Market Efficiently

"The secret to success in China? Simple: Find out where China are going, and get there first." - modified from Mark Twain

As a natural gas explorer and developer, pipeline builder, and gas and heating equipment or appliance manufacturer, if you plan to invest or sell you products to China, you had better do enough homework to save your cost and guarantee your high successful rate. At first you need to have a general picture about doing business in China to avoid a strategic mistake.
Many international companies are optimistic for China market opportunities in the early 1990s. They were rushed to make investment and hoped to take a piece of share in this largest and last market in the world. After this hot period, their optimum was replaced by realism. Before they came to China, they did not do market research and other homework. Now, they realize it is not easy to do business in China as the local regulation and policy changed frequently; the local partner was incapable; and no profit can be predicted in a near term. Why do some companies are successful but many companies are unsuccessful in China? Are there insider secrets to be successful in China? Before we give you the answers, we would like to share some basic secrets with you.
Is China a 1.3-billion-people market?
Not exactly! This concept misleads many international investors. Although China has 1.3 billion populations, it is not a 1.3-billion-people market. Especially for some high price products, the Chinese market is like a medium  or large size western European country. The basic reason is that agriculture population takes 70% of China's total population and only contributes 15% of China's total GDP.
There are many different markets in China
As economic development, environment, culture, living habit, and even language are varied in different areas of China, so the market is also different among the provinces and even within each province. The coastal provinces such as Guangdong, Fujian, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Shanghai City, and Beijing City are 5 to 10 times richer than the other areas of China. Therefore China is not a single uniformed market and is more like Europe consisted of many separated markets. A business strategy may be successful in one province but may not work in the other province.
The market in China is changing rapidly and you should be there at right time
Timing is very important. Within two years, Beijing, the capital city of China, became number one city in the world with about 3,000 CNG and LPG buses.  During this two-year period, some early comers of clean fuel engine and refueling station manufacturers took a fat profit from this clean fuel vehicle project.  Since then, many domestic and international manufacturers has been entering this market and facing more severed competition.  You had better prepare to enter the market during the government's planning stage. When the market is going to be ready you should move in quickly. But if you enter the market too early, you may loss your confidence, withdraw from the market, and miss the opportunities. To be a right timer, you need to have a market research at early time.
Who do you compete with in China?
In Europe, you may mainly compete with European and some American and Japanese; in U.S., you may mainly compete with American and some European and Japanese; in Japan, you may mainly compete with Japanese and some American and European. But in China, you compete with everybody and face stronger local Chinese competitors. Counterfeiting is a headache problem for many foreign manufacturers as the Chinese manufacturers are copying their products quickly to compete with them. Matsushita, a Japanese microwave oven manufacturer find Chinese-brand microwave ovens sold in the department stores are identical to those Matsushita produces at its Shanghai plant and even the mistake in the ovens is also identical.
Who you know is much more important than what you know?
Yes it is true at most time but not at every time. Most foreign businesspersons in China know a Chinese word, "Guanxi", which means who you know or the contacts you have can play a key role to help you to accomplish your business smoothly in China. "Guanxi" is important everywhere in the world but not like the Chinese to give it too much emphasis. Sometime you may fall in the "Guanxi" trap and confuse yourself. When you try to get in the Chinese market, many people will come to you and tell you they have good "Guanxi" and can win the deal for you. For one target company, one person may told you he has "Guanxi" with manager A; another person may told you he has "Guanxi" with manager B; and on and on.  At the end you don't know who is decision maker.   This kind of harassment often makes you confuse and even upset. After hiring these people with good "Guanxi", many companies finally found out that they are not only incapable but also screw up their business. Some companies give up the open bid for a project because they think they have no "Guanxi" even the bid actually is fair and open. Please don't give up. You can contact your target company directly without referrals and you will surprise that you can establish so many useful "Guanxi" by yourself. What you need to do is just finding the address book and sending the letter and brochure to introduce yourself.
